Atlantic Road Events and Season Guide
The Atlantic Road (Atlanterhavsvegen) is an 8.3 km stretch of County Road 64 that hops between islets and skerries between Karvag on Averoy and Vevang on the mainland, with the Storseisundet Bridge at its heart. It is not a festival destination, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest: what changes month to month here is the weather, the light and the driving conditions, not a listings calendar. So this guide covers what is genuinely on - the storm season, the northern lights, Advent and Christmas, the public holidays - and the local Christmas markets that run in Kristiansund and Molde. Every dated item rests on at least two sources; markets that only one listing carries are described, not dated.
Months at a glance
October 2026
Storm season opens and the road is at its most dramatic; clocks go back on 25 October. The month photographers aim for.
November 2026
Winter tyres become compulsory, the first Advent Sunday falls on 29 November, and the local Christmas markets open on the last weekend.
December 2026
The darkest, quietest weeks, with Advent Sundays, Christmas and the northern lights at their best on clear nights.
January 2027
The deep winter months: short days, snow, and the road largely to yourself. Winter driving experience essential.
Courses and workshops
There is no formal course calendar on the Atlantic Road itself. The skills visitors book locally are photography and winter driving, plus guided northern-lights trips.
Photography workshops and northern-lights tours
Local operators in Kristiansund, Molde and the surrounding Nordmore district run night-photography and aurora workshops through the autumn and winter, along with guided drives on the road. Schedules roll with the weather, so book direct with the operator and confirm the fee and the cloud forecast before you commit. See our own Atlantic Road photography guide for the best compositions and timings.
Winter driving practice
Norwegian driving schools run skid-pan (glattkjoring) courses, and the national authority recommends them before a first winter on these roads. Winter tyres are compulsory from November to April. See our Atlantic Road driving guide and winter guide.
