Atlantic Road Events - December 2026

December is dark - barely five or six hours of usable light - and quiet. It is also the month the northern lights are at their most reliable on clear nights, and the towns mark Advent, Christmas and the New Year in traditional style.

Season and fixtures

Advent Sundays

Sundays 6, 13 and 20 December 2026

The four-week Advent season leads into Christmas, with candle-lighting in churches and town-centre lights. The fourth Sunday falls on 20 December.

Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Second Day of Christmas

Norway celebrates mainly on Christmas Eve (24 December). Christmas Day and 26 December are public holidays, and most shops and restaurants close on the 25th.

Northern lights season at its peak

Clear nights through December (and to late March)

Long dark nights mean more aurora hours. Around the Atlantic Road the aurora is a possibility on clear nights rather than a certainty, and it is never dateable - but the Christmas period offers the longest window of darkness of the year. See our winter guide.

New Year's Eve

Thursday 31 December 2026

Fireworks in the coastal towns, with the usual Norwegian tradition of a quiet family evening before midnight. Not a public holiday, but many businesses close early.
